Lodging

Information on where we stayed during our journey:

Ireland: Kissane’s Cottage, Beaufort, near Killarney, County Kerry.  Wonderful house!

Edinburgh, Scotland: 21 Cordiner’s Land, near the Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.  Small, but great location, extremely clean, and reasonably priced (for this area).  Wonderful welcome basket full of breakfast goodies!

London, England:  Southwark Apartment, with view of the Thames from its balcony.   This was a studio apartment, in a great location by the Tower Bridge.  Had a wonderful balcony.  The main bed was quite comfortable; the pull-out sofa not as much.  So ideal for a couple or solo traveler.

York, England:  We stayed at the Hampton by Hilton York, which was an easy walk from the train station, and to the downtown area of York.  The room was great, and there was a full hot breakfast included in the price.  Hotel had a nice workout room, and a small bar.  Great option in York.

Copenhagen: We rented a 4 bedroom apartment through the company “Apartment in Copenhagen.”  This was the home of a family that was on extended vacation.  It was very cost-effective, compared to hotels in the area, and the company was easy to work with.

Berlin, Germany:  Berlin-Mitte apartment, near the Tiergarten.  Two bedrooms, with a balcony, in a quiet neighborhood, but close to the River Spree and an S-bahn station.  Great option for up to 4 persons.

Poznan, Poland: Villa Malta, or also known as  Malta Premium Hotel.  We liked it.  Close to Lake Malta, great breakfasts!

Venice, Italy:  Agriturismo Il Melograno  Great countryside option near Venice’s Marco Polo Airport, with 2 bedroom apartments for less than a typical hotel room.  20 minute bus ride to Venice.

Cotignac, France: Les Oliviers, a perfect home for enjoying the beauty of the Provence region.

Zadar, Croatia: Apartmani Petra. Wonderful owner, clean, nice neighbourhood away from the congestion of the old town.  Very inexpensive.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia: Plitvice Miric Inn, booked through booking.com.  Inexpensive, clean, good food.

Rakalj, Croatia (near Pula): Sailor’s House, a traditional Istrian stone house with 2 bedrooms, a beautiful stone fireplace, and a yard full of olive trees.

Our home for the week

Istanbul, Turkey: Great 1 bedroom apartment in the Sultanahmet section of Istanbul.  Easy walking distance to all the key historic sites.

New Zealand: In Wanaka and Paihia, we really enjoyed the places we arranged through Armed Forces Vacation Club.  If you are eligible to use their site, it’s worth checking out.  In Nelson, we had a great home that we rented through a couple who manage several homes.  I can pass on their contact info if anyone is interested.

Pucon, Chile:  We spent a month at Amor del Lago, a wonderful cabana (cabin) 10 minutes out of town, in a gorgeous setting.

Cuenca, Ecuador: We spent a month at Casa Rio, a spacious, well-situated condo on the River Tomebamba, next to the historic old town section of Cuenca.  There was a great park on the other side of the river, and it was a pleasant walk to the grocery store and nearby restaurants, as well as historical attractions.
